The balance between omega-3 and omega-6

Fatty acids are essential for the smooth running of our body and most people are familiar with the health benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids.  

Another group of fatty acids are the omega-6s, which also are important to our human health. The omega-6 fatty acids, like omega-3 fatty acids, cannot be produced by our bodies, they must be obtained through our diet. The problem is that we get too much omega-6 through our modern diet, as omega-6 is found in many vegetable oils and food that contain these oils, such as fast food and processed snacks, margarine and salad dressings.

Although we are depended on both omega-3 and omega-6, there is an important ratio between these two and we tend to get too much omega-6 than is good for our health.

In the typical Western diet, the consumption of omega-6 fatty acids have increased and omega-3 decreased. In earlier times the ratio was 1:1, but nowadays it often is 15–20:1 or even higher. Both omega-3 and omega-6 are vital for life, but it’s a balancing act. Today’s high ratio of omega-6 fatty acids is not desirable, as too high ratio of omega-6 can increase inflammation and chronic inflammatory diseases.

 

The optimal recommended omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is 5:1 and since it’s so easy to get omega-6 health authorities recommend that we concentrate on getting enough omega-3.
